My old handheld vacuum cleaner used to lose power in no time at all. I’d hardly had enough time to clean a couple of footwells in my car. I searched around for an alternative, and it seemed to be the case with a lot of other portable vacuum cleaners. But one stood out to me, a Worx WX030 vacuum cleaner. The reason it got my attention was that it used a replaceable battery system. It’s the same rechargeable batteries that are used in many other battery-powered Worx products.
What’s in the Box?
- 2.0Ah Battery (Code: WA3551.1)
- Charger (Code: WA3880)
- Flexible Crevice Nozzle
- Brush
First Impressions
The Worx WA030 is a battery-powered vacuum cleaner, which is described as a compact and lightweight device, with a powerful motor and high suction power. Getting it out of the box it was certainly noticeable that this was a surprisingly light vacuum cleaner, especially without the battery pack in. This was really apparent when I was holding it whilst cleaning around my car. It wasn’t a strain to hold it for the time taken to vacuum my rather large car, with a lot of carpet to clean.
It also looked to be quite a sturdy bit of kit. The charger unit and battery pack really look like they’re made to withstand the rigours of intensive use. As a result, the charger is rather chunky, but reassuringly so.
The vacuum cleaner itself is (I think) quite a stylish design, with the extendable hose being stored over the body as part of the handle. The carry handle itself is a sturdy plastic, then the flexible hose rests on top of that. It seems to me to be sturdy and able to withstand normal wear and tear.
The brush attachment isn’t huge, but it slots on the hose well. It has a strip of red material on one side to (I assume) help gliding on surfaces and to clean at the same time. Opposite to it on the brush head is a row of bristles, which are a good size and should help capture hairs and the like. To be honest it’s not an attachment I’m going to use much in my car, so haven’t used it much.
The attachment I will use mostly is the extendable crevice nozzle. The Worx description calls this a flexible crevice nozzle, but extendable is a better description, in my opinion. It clicks out to increase its reach, which I found useful to reach down between seats in my car (although I could have done with it reaching a little bit further, in truth).
Instruction Manuals
There were also instruction manuals included for both the vacuum cleaner and the charger. The charger instruction manual mostly covers safety aspects but has a couple of pages on its use, including the lights on the unit. The lights are used for showing charging status, but also whether there’s an overheating issue or a defective battery.
The booklet for the vacuum cleaner itself has more to cover, and has a paragraph or two on each of these:
- Installation of the soft thin brush / flat top brush
- Start/Stop
- Dust cup cleaning
- Maintenance
- Operation instructions for the accessories
- Precautions when using the vacuum cleaner
- Storage
- Troubleshooting
What’s the Worx WA030 like to use?
It’s claimed to have up to 25 minutes of running time, and that certainly was the case. I had bought a second battery to ensure I had enough to vacuum my car. The first time I vacuumed the (very) dirty car I needed to use both. But on subsequent cleans I usually only need the one battery charge to give everything a good clean.
The storage area for the brush and extendable crevice nozzle are both easily accessible, with small recesses on either side to make it easier to grip them to remove.
The extendable suction hose is easy to remove from the handle support, and extends to a reasonable distance to allow me to reach under car seats, into a deep boot (trunk) area and into footwells. I also found it easy to attach the accessories to use to the hose.
The extendable crevice nozzle was really useful, but I’m not sure how durable this is. I suspect that after some time it may not stay extended, as the bumps used to keep extensions in place may be less effective through wear. Time will tell.
The WX030 is really easy to turn on and off, with an easily accessible and clear orange button. Equally, the “dusting button” (the button to release the accumulated dust and debris!) is easy to see and press.
The 20V battery and motor is enough to produce 10kPa of suction. Now I’m afraid that doesn’t mean a lot to me, but what I can say is that it sucks well! I was able to clear away a lot of debris that had collected in the car. But I did manually remove larger gravel and similar pieces, as I didn’t want to cause problems for the vacuum.
As I mentioned before, it was so light and easy to hold and manoeuvre around the car whilst vacuuming. It was exactly what I had been hoping for! It’s also a good shape and weight to be stored in my car, so that I have it to hand when I have time to keep it tidy.
Emptying and Cleaning the WX030
Once cleaning had finished, I found it very easy to empty the contents of the dust cup and chamber. I pressed the dusting button whilst holding it over my wheelie bin, the trap door opened and the debris fell into the bin.
I then removed the filter by rotating the dust cup counterclockwise, and simply lifting the filter out. It was easy to clean under running water, after which I left it to dry off fully before replacing it in the machine again.
Charging the WA3551 Battery
The charger was very quick at recharging the battery. I didn’t time it, but the instructions state 1 hour charge time and that seems fair to me. It slots into the charger easily, and the lights on the front were easy to see. It flashed green whilst charging, then a solid green when fully charged. If there were problems the same light would flash red if overheating, or be a solid red if there was a defective battery.
Fitting the WA3551 Battery
It’s easy to fit the WA3551 battery to the WX030 vacuum cleaner. Just like the charger, there are guides to slot the battery into and attach to the visible pins. To remove the battery it’s simply a case of depressing the orange release button and sliding it back out of the guides.
Worx WA030 Summary
This is a really great vacuum cleaner. It’s lightweight, powerful, and the fact that it uses a removable rechargeable battery system makes it extremely versatile. It packs away into a nice, compact shape which makes storage really easy for me. I also found it easy to clean out debris after use. It’s quick to recharge the battery, and easy to pick up a spare if you need extended use.
Another plus is that it uses the same battery system as many other Worx tools. If you already have those you’ll already have a charger and battery. In that case you can buy this vacuum cleaner without the charger and battery.
My only concern is with regards to the longevity of the nozzles, especially the extendable crevice nozzle. It hasn’t failed me yet, but it just strikes me that this is a likely weak point.
