When a field hockey stick starts to wear on the handle, one way of increasing the longevity of the stick is to change the grip. A chamois hockey grip is a great option. It can easily wrap over the top of the existing grip, whilst giving excellent grip in wet weather.

I opted to use a grip from Shammy Shack, who I’ve used before and know the quality of the synthetic chamois. There was an offer on for a grip including stitched initials, so I grabbed the chance for a white grip to contrast the blue of my hockey stick.

I also purchased some cotton tape, to affix the chamois grip to the stick. The chamois is totally synthetic and therefore no animals are harmed during the manufacture process.

Fitting a chamois hockey grip

Start at the bottom of the existing grip. First, use the end of the chamois grip that is tapered. Keep the flat side at the bottom, tapered side towards the top. Hold the grip firmly, whilst you wrap the grip around the stick. Slightly overlap the chamois that is already laid in place.

Keep this motion going. Overlap the chamois grip as you work your way up, whilst ensuring that you keep the grip nice and taut as you go.

When you get near the top of the stick, you’ll need to cut the excess off, whilst tapering the top. You need to leave a little room for the tape to go over the top and keep the chamois grip in place. The existing grip should be indication enough as to where to end the grip and overlap the tape.

Using scissors, cut from the top around, so that the chamois grip will be level with the top of the stick.

Securing in Place

Next you can use cotton tape to affix the top of the chamois grip onto the stick. Start by overlapping the end of the grip, wrapping the tape tightly around the tape. Run it around a couple of times for strength.

In addition, wrap the tape a couple of times around the bottom of the chamois hockey stick grip as well, to keep it firmly in place at the bottom. The end result is a very smart, secure finish, which will work really well in both dry and wet weather. I’m loving the look of the smart grip, especially with the monogram on it!

These are great grip replacements, especially in wet weather. Thoroughly recommended. The only issue is making sure the grip is fitted snugly. Keep it taut as you go and you should be fine. But it helps to have an extra pair of hand handy the first time you do it.

You can find this and other chamois grips for your hockey stick at Shammy Shack.
